From Aerospace Engineer to Web Developer, Meet Christine Woodruff

“Ultimately, I think one of the most important things I got out of this course was the confidence to try.” – Christine Woodruff

I spent 12 years working as an Aerospace Engineer.

While some may think that position sounds glamorous, it just never felt like the right fit 20160608_164240for me; I felt uninspired and ready for a change.  I had learned the basics of writing code as an engineer, but the gap between writing an If Statement and being a software developer felt enormous and overwhelming.  When I read about the success at Interface Web School I was intrigued and when they offered the “Transition to Web Development with Java” option for students with some prior experience writing code I knew it was exactly what I was looking for.

Kent Smotherman was my instructor for this course and I truly cannot say enough good things about him.  He is obviously an expert in his field, but also extremely patient, eternally enthusiastic, and just plain fun to learn with.  Early on, Kent pointed out the importance of being engaged during class.

This course covered an enormous amount of information in a very short period of time and I agreed that it was key to not just listen in class, but to genuinely think, ask questions, and consider the next steps.  Kent is an invaluable resource and I am grateful for the short time I was able to spend with him.

Ultimately, I think one of the most important things I got out of this course was the confidence to try.  A goal which once seemed so overwhelming turned out to be attainable through hard work, measured progress, and the right “push”. Throughout the course I reached out within my network to try to market my new skills and two weeks before the end I landed a job as a Web Developer with a government contractor.  I’ve been at my new job for almost two months and I have never been happier with the work I am doing.  The days fly by and I am excited to go back each morning to make more progress. The skills I learned with Interface have led to a successful and, most importantly, HAPPY first two months in a new career.  I feel so lucky to do work that I truly enjoy and am thrilled with the options now in my future.

Are you ready to use your previous coding experience to take your career to the next level? Applications for our 10 week, Java Specialization course open July 1. Class starts September 12.
